Pressure washing in Purcellville, VA

Purcellville had a concrete manufacturing plant of its own in the 1920s, and the town's concrete block, some of it cast to look like cut stone, still stands in its historic district along with stone walls and gate posts, at the foot of the Blue Ridge, so we wash block and stone here along with the houses around them.

A 1920s concrete plant and block cast like stone

Fires in 1900 and 1914 destroyed much of Purcellville's commercial core. The National Register nomination for its historic district says that, as a result, the vast majority of its existing commercial buildings post-date 1914 and are built of “fire-proof materials, including brick and formed concrete block.”

In the 1920s a concrete manufacturing plant opened at 100 East O Street, and the nomination ties the popularity of concrete block in town directly to it. It also names molded concrete block, cast and usually formed to resemble cut or rusticated stone, and three houses built of it, and a number of houses have composite-style concrete columns. The district went on the state register in December 2006 and the national one in April 2007, and it spans 293 acres with 490 contributing buildings.

The Town's rule: “the gentlest means possible”

Purcellville's Design Guidelines were adopted by the Town Council on December 12, 2006, and the Board of Architectural Review page still links to that edition. They cover non-residential development across the town limits and historic houses in the Historic Overlay District. Their wording on cleaning is short: the surface cleaning of structures “shall be undertaken with the gentlest means possible,” and sandblasting, or any other cleaning method that will damage historic building materials, is not allowed. In the guidelines, “shall” makes a rule mandatory.

The same guidelines ask that all awnings be “well maintained, washed regularly, and replaced when faded or torn.” We wash a shop's awnings together with the wall behind them and the sidewalk beneath them, and a shop can have us back as often as it likes, with no fixed plan to sign up for. Downtown's densest stretch of shops went up between 1915 and 1940 on both sides of North 21st Street, from Main Street north to the right of way of the old W&OD Railroad, with concrete sidewalks along both sides.

Stone walls, gate posts, and siding in the shade

The nomination finds fences, retaining walls, or gate posts of wood, stone, or decorative concrete block on a substantial number of house lots. Some are a stonemason's work: it credits Louis Rector with elaborate stone walls and gate posts at two houses on South 11th and South 12th Streets. Walls and gate posts like those are on our list, and so are wood fences and decorative block retaining walls.

Mature shade trees still line the residential blocks of West Main Street, where the larger houses sit 50 to 75 feet back. The town stands in the Loudoun Valley between the Catoctin and Blue Ridge Mountains, and its 2030 Comprehensive Plan calls it nestled against the Blue Ridge and dates its first Tree City USA designation to 2006. In September 2026 a Town news release reported the Tree City USA Award for the 19th consecutive year.

From photos to a Purcellville quote

Purcellville is about 39 miles from Front Royal, a little over an hour's drive. Loudoun County carries no travel fee, and we have no minimum charge for a job.

  1. Photograph the block, the stone, and anything else you want washed, gate posts and awnings included, and text the pictures to 540-514-5916. The form works too.
  2. Usually the photos alone let us price the work, and quotes cost nothing. An extremely complicated job gets a look in person first.
  3. On the day, block, stone, and siding each get soft washing or pressure washing, whichever suits that surface best, so one visit may use both. Beds and plantings along the walls are wetted before any washing starts and rinsed once it's finished. Satisfaction guaranteed. If we missed anything, tell us and we'll come back and make it right.
